The Canary Effect

- Why is this documentary called "The Canary Effect"?

Maud:  Like the miners canary, the Indian marks the shift from fresh air to poison gas in our political atmosphere.

Linda: And our treatment of the Indians even more than our treatment of other minorities, reflects the rise and fall of our democratic faith.

- Why is it ridiculous to say that Columbus discovered America?

Linda: There were already people living there.

Maud: Columbus claimed the land of the Indians.

- What have you learnt from watching this film?

Maud: I've learned that Columbus didn't discover America, and that they treated the native Americans bad.

Linda: I've learned how native Americans were treated by the people of Europe.
